Corticosteroids are synthetic analogues of the natural cortisol hormone, which secreted by the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids have two main therapeutic effect, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effect. Since 1950s, when Henoch used this group drugs in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, different form of steroids were commonly studied in the treatment of other autoimmune and rheumatologic disorders.
Corticosteroids are available in different formulations, including: oral, injection (intramuscular, intravenous, intraarticular), topical (ointment for the skin, droplet for the eyes, and inhalation for the respiratory system). In this review, we discuss on the effects of corticosteroids depends on the dosages. Different doses and side effects of corticosteroids are discussed in detail in this review, including: physiologic effects, inhibit neuroendocrine axis, stress doses (in perioperative and other stress), anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive, with emphasize on rheumatologic and autoimmune disorders.
