Paying attention to the academic promotion of faculty members is of great importance in universities since ignoring it can lead to academic stagnation of faculty members and a decrease in their motivation. In the Ministry of Health regulations, examples of academic stagnation for faculty members include failure to be promoted for 3 consecutive years, or for 4 alternating years, and failure to be promoted to a higher rank within the specified period of time. Since the most important factor affecting academic stagnation in previous studies was identified as the research factor, this study was conducted to evaluate the research status of faculty members and those subject to academic stagnation at Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran. This study is of an applied purpose and uses a descriptive and prospective method to evaluate the status of theses and dissertations in the last 5 years, from 2018 to 2022. In this study, a census was conducted to examine all the research activities of all faculty members of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, which consisted of 546 people. Data were collected, and the findings were reported with descriptive statistics, frequency, and percentage. The findings of this study showed that 46.7% of all faculty members' research resulted in articles, while this rate was 41.5% among those subject to academic stagnation. It was also determined that the highest rate of academic stagnation is among assistant professors who have not been promoted to the rank of associate professor in the past 8 years. In this study, it was determined that those subject to academic stagnation, the same as other faculty members, did not publish more than half of their research articles. Therefore, the researchers suggested conducting more in-depth qualitative and mixed studies to identify the causes of academic stagnation, challenges, and necessary solutions
