Abstract:   (9402 Views)

Postpartum depression is a prevalent and debilitating psychosocial disorder that can vary in intensity. It can occur during the first 4 weeks after delivery. Previous studies have been shown that postpartum depression not only could induce undesirable effects on mother, child, and family but also incurs health care costs on society. Though, some pharmacological and non pharmacological interventions are available in treatment and prevention of postpartum depression, but there are some reports about protean efficacy of these interventions. This article reviews risk factors, screening tools, preventive and therapeutic interventions in postpartum depression with an emphasis on psychotherapy (interpersonal therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy) and social support.
