Background and purpose: Infectious disease epidemics have posed unprecedented challenges to the health care system, especially for hospitals, in recent years. These crises affect the capacity to provide health services and impose a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, the present study aimed to provide a comprehensive and systematic review of scientific evidence to identify practical and effective strategies for increasing the preparedness and resilience of hospitals against infectious disease epidemics.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted using a systematic review method based on the PRISMA guidelines. In this study, three electronic databases, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, were searched using the keywords Crisis management, Infectious diseases, and COVID-19 from January 1, 2000 to March 6, 2025. The quality assessment of all articles was carried out using the Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) checklist.
Results: Out of a total of 315 articles, 22 articles with title, abstract, and relevant text were reviewed. The findings of the study showed that hospitals managed infectious disease crises with effective strategies in the areas of leadership and planning, resources and infrastructure, staff training and empowerment, operations and crisis response, and information technology.
Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive and practical framework for pandemic crisis management in hospitals based on the four stages of the crisis management cycle, which can significantly help improve the performance of hospitals in emergency situations. It is recommended that policymakers and health managers enhance the preparedness and resilience of hospitals by developing comprehensive plans based on the proposed strategies.
