Introduction: University professors, as one of the main pillars of the education system, need to manage their psychological well-being. This enables them not only to maintain their own mental health but also to play an effective and positive role in the education process and promote the mental health of students. “Psychological success” or “successful emotional intelligence” is one of the important psychological domains that professors should ensure they possess for their own empowerment. Accordingly, the present study was conducted with the aim of reviewing successful intelligence with an educational approach and its impact on the psychological empowerment of university professors.
Method: This study was applied in nature and conducted using a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design. In the qualitative phase, the dimensions of successful intelligence with an educational approach were identified through grounded theory and interviews with 13 university experts. In the quantitative phase, 289 participants were selected through stratified random sampling from among 1,162 faculty members of universities in Golestan Province, and they were assessed using two questionnaires on successful intelligence and psychological empowerment. Validity and reliability of the instruments were examined using established statistical indices, and the data were analyzed qualitatively through grounded theory coding and quantitatively through structural equation modeling.
Findings: The results showed that successful intelligence, a combination of analytical, creative, and practical intelligence, plays a key role in enhancing the psychological capabilities of professors. Successful intelligence enables professors to improve their abilities in controlling emotions, coping with work-related stress, classroom conflicts, and educational environments, establishing effective communication with students, colleagues, other professors, and administrators, enhancing cognitive and emotional skills and professional behaviors, and improving the work-life balance of professors.
Conclusion: It is recommended that universities and educational institutions guide and support university professors and instructors in benefiting from training related to successful intelligence, so that the improvement of students’ mental health, alongside the quality of higher education, is enhanced. This educational approach has been recognized as a sustainable strategy for the psychological management of university professors and instructors and for promoting an effective and positive educational environment.
