Background and Objective: The increasing trend of stroke and its impact on cognitive processes has prompted researchers to investigate effective interventions to reduce stroke-related problems. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of sleep hygiene education techniques on working memory and retrospective memory in women with mild stroke.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a control group design. The statistical population included all elderly women with mild stroke in Shiraz, Iran. A convenience sampling method was used to select 32 elderly participants, who were then matched and assigned to either the experimental or control group. Participants in the experimental group received sleep hygiene techniques for 10 sessions, each lasting 60 minutes. Data were collected using the Working Memory Questionnaire (Walton, 2012) and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (Crawford et al., 2003), administered at three stages: before and after the sleep hygiene training program, and during the follow-up phase for both groups.
Results: Analysis of covariance showed that sleep hygiene training significantly improved working memory and retrospective memory in women with mild stroke. The experimental group maintained better performance in both working and retrospective memory during the follow-up phase (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, sleep hygiene techniques can help reduce memory-related challenges in the elderly, particularly those with stroke. Improving memory status can enhance an individual's personal and social quality of life.
