Abstract:   (17 Views)
Beyond mere income generation, professional activity serves as a vital instrument for enhancing self-confidence, purpose, and social participation for individuals with Down syndrome. However, their integration into professional spheres—particularly the fashion industry—demands an approach rooted in ‘professional ethics’ and ‘respect for individual autonomy.’ While their presence in fashion can contribute to redefining beauty standards and fostering empowerment, it is imperative to prevent any form of instrumentalization, exploitation, or professional imposition that contradicts their personal interests and abilities. Given the unique cognitive, physical (such as hypotonia), and safety challenges they face, it is essential to establish a balance between ‘supporting individual choice’ and ‘ensuring safety and well-being.’ This should be achieved through interdisciplinary assessments, the provision of inclusive and adapted work environments, and the formulation of clear ethical guidelines by relevant authorities, ultimately transcending societal stereotypes to achieve employment characterized by dignity and respect.
